Vegan Lubricant and its Benifits

Artificial lubricant, or lube, is a substance used to enhance sexual experience. Applied to any part of the body that feels comfortable, although typically the genitals, it can (and maybe should!) be used by people of all ages and sexualities to provide for smooth and enjoyable sex. In a study by the Indiana University in 2009, of the 2453 women aged 18-68, 70% claimed that lube made for more pleasurable and enjoyable sex. Whilst the vagina and penis do provide natural lubrication and lube may not necessarily be needed, that doesn’t mean that it cannot be added to intensify sexual activity!

Lube can be especially helpful to people experiencing vaginal dryness. Whilst there may be somewhat of a stigma surrounding vaginal dryness, it is in reality very common and can happen to women of all ages. Despite this, it is often unfairly viewed in a judgemental and negative way, often causing women to feel embarrassed about talking about it or seeking treatment, despite the uncomfortable and painful implications that it can have for the bedroom and everyday life. Vaginal dryness and atrophy shouldn’t just be considered something to get on with or a natural part of aging, there are medical steps that can be taken to significantly help! However, at Vegan Toys, that is not our area of speciality, our speciality is sex! What we can do is point out that using a water-based lubricant during sex and solo-play can vastly reduce discomfort and pain, ensuring that people experiencing vaginal dryness can still enjoy comfortable and exciting sex.

In addition to making vaginal sex more comfortable, lube is also ideal for anal sex and anal solo-play. Unlike the vagina, the anus provides very little natural lubrication during sex, therefore the use of lube can ensure that if enjoy anal sex or anal solo-play, you can do so comfortably and safely.

When choosing a lubricant, it is important to remember that there a several types, and each has their advantages and disadvantages. Of course, at the end of the day it comes down to personal preference, however using a water-based lubricant is a good place to start. Water-based lube can be used for all types of sex and is far less likely to cause irritation to people with sensitive skin. It can also easily be washed away with water, and will not stain clothes or sheets, unlike some other lubes such as silicone ones. However, water-based lubes do have their disadvantages; they cannot be used in shower-play as they will just wash away. They also require more frequent re-application during sex, otherwise they begin to feel a little sticky.

In contrast, silicone-based lubes are very slippery and long-lasting and less needs to be applied than water-based alternatives. In this sense they may be perfect if you have a sexual all-nighter planned! Silicone-based lubricants can also be used in the shower or bath as they will not wash away like their water-based counterparts. However, silicone-based lubes are far more difficult to wash off, requiring soap and water, and you also run the risk of stained sheets. Other drawbacks include the fact that they can be damaging to silicone sex toys and are more likely to cause irritation than water-based lubes.

Finally, it is important to remember that whilst most lubes are vegan friendly, not all are! Some lubes use animal derivatives in the form of enzymes, whilst others use beeswax extracts. When choosing a lube that you feel comfortable with, remember that it isn’t safe to assume that it will not contain animal products. If you are looking to enhance the bedroom experience but don’t want to do so at the cost of animal well-being, then you may want to try our Vegan Toys natural vegan friendly water-based lubricant!
